Frequently Asked Questions

  • For No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, the proper attire includes a rash guard and shorts or spats (leggings) that are snug and comfortable. Gi pants are also acceptable attire. A rash guard, typically made from moisture-wicking fabric, helps protect the skin from friction and prevents the spread of bacteria, while also allowing full range of movement. Shorts or spats should be free of zippers, pockets, or any sharp objects to ensure safety during training. Spats can be worn alone or under shorts, depending on personal preference.

We recommend that students wear attire specifically designed for grappling to ensure both comfort and safety. Shoes, jewelry, and loose-fitting clothing are not permitted during training, as they can cause injury to you or your training partners. Proper No-Gi gear allows for unrestricted movement and helps maintain a safe, effective training environment for all participants.

  • Yes, parents are welcome to watch their child’s Jiu Jitsu class, but we ask that you remain silent and refrain from coaching your child during the session. We believe that your presence can be supportive, but it's important for children to focus on their instructor's guidance and develop independence on the mats.

This allows them to fully engage with the class and absorb the lessons being taught without outside distractions. If you have younger children with you or are unable to remain quiet, we kindly ask that you step into the hallway to help maintain a calm and focused training environment for all students.

  • Yes, students at Precision Submission Grappling do have the opportunity to compete, though it is not a requirement. We encourage competition for those who are interested, as it helps build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and apply the techniques and concepts learned in class under pressure. Competing in local and regional Jiu Jitsu tournaments allows our kids to challenge themselves, test their abilities, and experience personal growth in a supportive environment.

For those who choose to compete, we offer additional guidance to prepare them for the unique demands of competition. Competition is an excellent way for them to further their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey and at Precision Submission Grappling, we support every student’s goals, whether they want to compete or simply enjoy learning and improving their skills at our Des Moines academy.
