How We Use “Games” To Teach Kids Jiu Jitsu — And Why It Works!

At Precision Submission Grappling, we take pride in creating an environment where kids not only learn Jiu Jitsu but also have fun while doing it. One of the core methods we use in our kids’ jiu jitsu programs is incorporating “games” into our teaching. But these aren’t just random activities to pass the time—they’re carefully designed learning experiences rooted in a constraints-led approach and the principles of ecological dynamics. Let’s explore how these methods work and why they’re so effective.

The Science Behind the Fun
The constraints-led approach is a teaching method that focuses on guiding students to discover effective movement patterns through the manipulation of task, environment, and individual constraints. By shaping the conditions in which kids practice, we encourage them to solve problems and adapt their movements in real time—just like they would in a live Jiu Jitsu match.
Ecological dynamics complements this by emphasizing how learners interact with their environment. In our games, kids are constantly adjusting to dynamic situations, learning to perceive opportunities for action (also known as "affordances") and developing the decision-making skills that are essential for Jiu Jitsu.

What Do These Games Look Like?
Games are designed to simulate real grappling scenarios in an engaging and age-appropriate way. They’re performed in a “live” environment, meaning they are done against real resistance and are structured to naturally highlight the key principles of Jiu Jitsu, such as leverage, timing, and control, without overwhelming kids with technical jargon or rigid drills.
Students are placed in semi-connected positions and given clear and easy-to-understand tasks that guide them towards opportunities for action. Tasks are designed to inform the students about what we want them to do rather than how to do them. This gives students the freedom to explore, experience the effect of their actions, and express their creativity in solving complex grappling problems.
Why It Works
Engagement: Kids love to play, and games make learning Jiu Jitsu exciting and enjoyable. When kids are having fun, they’re more likely to stay focused and put in the effort to improve.
Retention: Lessons learned through play are more likely to stick. By experiencing Jiu Jitsu concepts firsthand in a game, kids build a deeper understanding of techniques and strategies.
Adaptability: Games expose kids to a wide variety of scenarios, teaching them to adapt and think critically on the fly. This prepares them for real-world grappling situations where no two matches are ever the same.
Confidence Building: Success in these games boosts self-esteem and helps kids build the resilience they need to tackle challenges on and off the mat.
A Better Way to Learn
By using games as a teaching tool, we’re not just teaching kids how to grapple—we’re encouraging problem-solving skills, creativity, and a love for learning. This approach not only helps them excel in Jiu Jitsu but also equips them with life skills that will serve them well beyond our academy. You might also be surprised to learn that we use the same approach to learning in our Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu classes with tremendous results.
